There isn’t anyone I know who, being honest, could say that they don’t at times struggle with faith and doubt, sometimes toggling between the two from month to month, day to day, and even hour to hour.
And isn’t it so very human of us to want physical proof of God’s presence in our lives, like Thomas did? Especially now.
Wouldn’t we just love it if there was a sudden glow in the sky throughout the world, and the covid-19 virus disappeared. It’s the stuff of daydreams and science fiction movies – but not how life, or God, usually works.
Until recently it would have been hard for us to imagine what today is our reality. And there is a very real probability that 6 months from now we will forget much of the details of these days we are going through. Which would be so very unfortunate- since God is truly, quietly, subtly present to us each day we experience this pandemic.
One way that we can make sure not to lose the insights into life, and God, that are surrounding us, often unseen until we look, is to take time to write a spiritual journal …. a small diary of each day and its insights.
It is doubtful that in those notes we will recount the kind of dramatic revelation that Thomas had of the Risen Christ. Rather, they will reveal to us the somewhat quieter moments of revelation: a phone call that lifts our spirits, an email that brings good news, a book that helps us to understand things better. And more: people and places, things in the natural world, love.
God is being revealed to us in every moment of these days. Taking time to reflect on these moments will not only help us as we go through these moments now, but will become a rich source of personal inspiration in the future.
