Spiritual Direction

One of the beautiful gifts we have in our Catholic tradition is the “Spiritual Director”. Despite its name, a Spiritual Director does not really “direct” a person.  In reality, they become a companion on a person’s spiritual journey.  A spiritual “co-discernor”.  Someone who can assist you is seeing and hearing how God is calling you to be, in the words of Matthew Kelly, “the best version of yourself”; or in church parlance, your call to Holiness.

At its most authentic, the spiritual director and the person seeking spiritual direction are sent to each other so that, united in the same spirit, they may together listen to God within the person seeking direction.  Unfortunately, while this modern society understands that this type of relationship is valuable for a person’s growth (think “Life-Coach, Personal Trainer, Mentor” – all part of marketplace and business jargon) , we have forgotten how important it is for our spiritual growth.  (important enough that as Deacons, we are required to have Spiritual Directors as well as support groups!)

Have you felt the call within you to deepen your faith?   A gentle “nudge” to consider investing some time and effort on your spiritual-self?  Perhaps seeking out a Spiritual Director might be a good first step in exploring a deeper relationship with God !
