one two three

It appears that one of the media themes this month revolves around our ability to create a new “normal” ….. there is a tacit understanding that we will not return to the “way things were” and hence we have an ability to really influence the “way things will be”.

So how does one create a “new normal”? While I see the trend, I don’t have any profound insights into how this is done globally, or nationally, or even locally.

But, over the years I have had some experience in creating “new normals” for myself.  (Usually, the new normal would have more exercise, less calories, and a healthier lifestyle than my “old normals”.)

What has worked for me? Three things.

First, START SMALL. Not big.  When I needed to do more exercise, I resisted the urge to jog like I did when I was younger.  I walked.  30 minutes. 2-3 times a week.  Slowly, I added more time. Our society seems to like big ticket items.  Grand plans.  For this old soul, small and steady works better.  Allows me time to change my behaviour and habits.  Which, by their very nature, don’t change rapidly.

Second – JUST DO IT. Sorry, Nike.  Don’t overthink or overplan.  Even in those days you don’t feel like doing it, do it.

Third – ENJOY THE CHANGE.  Mentally see it in it’s most positive light.  Not a loss of what was before but the creation of what will be.

That’s it.   When you are comfortable with what you have done, then repeat the three steps.  Add something small to the changes you made.  Then just do it, and enjoy it.

So, how does this relate to our shared experience of pandemic? Well, our quarantine or altered work situations have provided us an opportunity to experience many things we would not have otherwise.

Some we may not wish to incorporate into our future “normals”.   Home schooling while home “officing” comes to mind!  But some, like doing more indoor fun activities with the kids, or video-chatting with friends far away, or taking time to care for ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually, are quite possibly things we can see ourselves continuing to do as part of our new normal.

So, start building that future now .. by incorporating a small bit of the things we want to be in our “future normal” into our days or weeks now.  Maybe it is reflective walks.  Start now.  Maybe it is reading inspiring literature.   Start now. Maybe it is praying with scripture. Start now.  Considering all the other things that have happened to us recently, this really isn’t that difficult …  It’s as easy as 1,2,3.
