catherine of sienna

Today is the feast day of Saint Catherine of Sienna, a Doctor of the Church. When still a teenager she joined a group of Dominican laywomen who lived in their homes while dedicating their lives to prayer and active works of charity.

Catherine’s first years as a Dominican were spent in seclusion in her family home where she prepared for an active life of service to others. As the years went on, this service took the form of caring for the sick and poor, nursing plague victims and counselling others who wished to grow spiritually.

Her example of active enthusiasm continues to inspire Dominican men and women today.

And as you and I experience seclusion in our homes, how fitting it is to remember that it is how Catherine began her ministry

As we journey together today, perhaps we can offer this prayer for the intercession of Saint Catherine, written by Sr. Caitriona Gorman OP.

We invite you Beloved St. Catherine of Siena, woman of peace, woman of love and compassion, who served the sick and suffering in time of plague, intercede for us now, so that the whole world, the Church you loved, and the Order to which you belonged, may be protected from Covid 19.

Be with those who are hospitalised because of the virus, through your intercession may they know inner peace, strength and a a return to health.

Comfort and console those who mourn their loved ones, you knew the pain of loss, fill their lives with the certainty that those who have died, live now in the presence of God.

Woman of wisdom, guide all those who tirelessly work to provide a vaccine at this time, guide them and inspire them. Through your intercession may their work be successful.

Pray for us, that we may be a contemplative people, courageous, generous and self-sacrificing in walking this Paschal road with all who need our prayers, support and help.

St Catherine pray for us, Amen
